St. John the Baptist Day (January 7) is cause for joy for all named ”Ion”, “Ioan”, “Ioana” or similar. The day is celebrated by everyone in Romania, because this holy day is the last major holiday of the Winter.
John the Baptist is the one who baptized Jesus Christ in Jordan, who said that Jesus is “the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world” and saw the divine side of Christ.
Following the courage to face the Roman authorities and due to his critics, Saint John was beheaded! Considered the Forerunner of the Lord, he is the last great prophet of the Old Testament, and also the one who made the transition to the New Testament period.
Almost two million Romanians are named after St. John. We say “La Multi Ani, Ioan” for all of them!
